Using Your Kiln Safely

Kilns operate at extremely high temperatures. that being said, it is very important that you remember to always follow your basic safety precautions. There are several simple steps that you can take to keep yourself safe around this potentially dangerous device.

If you are using an electric model, kiln sitters are a must. These act as a fail-safe means of ending a firing once it has reached the target temperature, or slightly above. The kiln sitter will then automatically shut off the electric current within the unit, thereby reducing the risk that it will reach a temperature that is unsafe. you should also avoid unplugging the unit unless it is turned off. Turn all switches to off before loading or unloading.

Every kiln fires cone 10 glazes at extreme temperatures. although the unit has more than enough insulation to keep most of that heat inside, the outside surface can become hot enough to burn you if you touch it. Kiln mitts or gloves should be worn if you need to handle any part of the unit while it is firing. keep in mind that once it has been turned off, it will remain hot to the touch for several hours afterward. Do not open or touch it until the unit has completely cooled.

When kilns are firing they release gases which may be toxic or even lethal if safety measures are not followed. Kiln ventilation is key when it comes to safety. Carbon dioxide is given off during fuel-burning firing. Carbon monoxide is released during reduction firing. Make sure that your unit is either outside or vented outside properly by a license heating, ventilation and air-conditioning contractor. These professionals have the equipment necessary to accurately test the ventilation system. Turn on the vent prior to loading to prevent ceramic glaze dust exposure.

There are safety tips that seem obvious, but sometimes we could all use a friendly reminder. Do not under any circumstances allow children near kilns. you should also not operate one in a wet area. a kiln lid or door should never be opened when it is firing. Never put anything on top of the unit. Make sure that the outside of is cool to the touch before unloading. The pieces that you are trying to remove should also be easily removed with your bare hand. if you will be using a kiln spy hole, make sure that you wear dark glasses made specifically for this purpose. This will protect your eyes from the radiant heat.
