n 2012 Knights of Columbus Basketball Free Throw Championship: Open to all boys and girls ages 10 to 14 the competition for Portsmouth area contestants (includes Greenland, New Castle, Portsmouth, Rye) will be held on Saturday, Jan. 21, at the Portsmouth Middle School gym, 155 Parrott Ave., Portsmouth. Registration begins at 1:30 p.m. Competition starts at 2 p.m. Winners will progress through local, district and state competitions. all contestants will compete in their respective age divisions and will be recognized for their participation in the event. n The Twitchers in the Rye: will be taking part in the Superbowl of Birding on Jan. 28 and spending the entire day in Rye. the Superbowl is a competition that takes place on the last Saturday in January — but this Superbowl has nothing to do with football. it involves looking for as many bird species as possible in 12 hours and is run by Massachusetts Audubon’s Joppa Flats Education Center. Teams can compete in Essex County, Massachusetts and/or Rockingham County, New Hampshire. the Twitchers is also raising money to support N.H. Audubon and accepting pledges to support N.H. Bird Records and N.H. eBird (both programs of N.H. Audubon’s Conservation Department).
