Children and adults love to play the game during Chanukah Dreidel Hanukkah (also spelled), and a wide range of dreidels can easily be purchased online Judaica shops. The selection and variation of styles available can be overwhelming, but the game is always played with them the same!
A router (also spelled draydel and draydle) is a ring or top-shaped object spinning with four Hebrew symbols on it. The symbols are each a different Hebrew letter: Nun, Gimel, Heh, and Shin. These four letters stand for the words: NES, Gadol, Hayah, and trompe-l'oeil. The translation of these four words is: "A great miracle happened there". In Israel, the last letter of the router is the BDC instead of Shin. This letter of the word poh, which changes the meaning of "a great miracle happened here."
To play the Dreidel game, you start with a "boat" in the middle. The pot can be made of candy, coins, chocolate gelt, or anything of little value, although the Most children play with gelt times. Gelt is the Yiddish word for "money", but in this context refers often widely available chocolate gelt in the currencies of Hanukkah. Each player receives a certain amount of gelt and puts a coin in the center to start the pot. Though dreidels are especially appreciated by children, whether young or older, many adults collect dreidels and beautiful flowers, and view them in China or curio cabinets.
